In ancient Greek and Latin literature, an epitome (Greek: ἐπιτομή, epitomē) was an abridgement of a longer work. In this site, it refers to a series of shorter articles that should be accessible to students and the interested public. The bulk of the Classical references and much of the scholarly nuance and argumentation are cut to provide a streamlined reading.
The goal of these epitomes (or epitomae as it is sometimes Latinized) is for students can quickly and concisely get a handle on an ancient author and their works or particular topic or facet of the ancient world. Scholarly controversies will be presented just enough for further research if they are so inclined, and resources are provided for texts, translations, and further reading.
